If I get "writers block" on a track or have one 90% completed, I always put the track aside for a few days. The later I'll go back to the track fresh and usually fix a broken track into something I like or on the other hand I'll add some small touches or changes to the almost finished track to really make it shine in my ears.
I've even been digging up old tracks of mine and giving em a new polish and direction, since I'm getting better at fixing things wrong and have loads more ideas/techniques to use.

iv had the biggest break from writing music ever... about 3 weeks now. Iv been ill and some other shits been up so iv not had the motivation or iv been to busy doing admin shit for the new webshop n labels ( www.audiosickness.com
i have been topping up on inspo tho by watching a silly amount of movies and im almost ontop of business shit... i got some other stuff to get out of the way but by this weekend (my last wknd off from gigging for quite a while) im gonna get back into my usual routine...
..which is, wake up around 8am and check emails etc n do typing based crap for an hour while i eat my brekkie then fire up cubase and write tuna.. i say write tuna but its usualy just a series of failed ideas and frustration for a while then il have to start watching a film but then get more ideas n try them then back to the flim, then back to cubase etc and so on.. this sometimes brings success... alot of the time it just brings me speaking to scheme boy or fury about how shit everything is haha
..i actualy cant wait to get back into my routine of stress

being kind of new at this sort of thing, I might be doing things completely weird.
Normally before I make a song, I make a folder full of samples of similar genres and split them into guitar tracks that I can use to base the song off of, and voice and sounds I can use to supplement the guitar (and/or other lead instrument). Then I change tempos to make sure everything fits together properly. After this, I can normally make a song in about 10 minutes. I just go into my drum machine and make about 20 drum tracks with various samples with it, mess with distortion and other effects, and then piece it together. This strategy has worked pretty well for me so far =p

I like to sort out all the beatz n shit on FL Studio like a scetch pad, then I export a load of WAV files from it and rearange them on Cubase. I mostly tit about on FL doing random stuff and following some tutorials to "look" for ideas.
Ive been doin it for a couple of years now mostly on an on/off basis. I have come up with some mostly god-awfull shite, but people dig through alot of shite to get to the gold
I guess the important thing IS to enjoy yourself (even if you get off on having thousands of VSTs and samples stuffed on your harddrive). Just as important is to learn, because theres alot of stuff to learn.
The only way that your going to fail is if you do it only for fame and money. If that is the case, you may as well just wank your cock off to the radio, imagining that your a gobshite pop music producer.......

****Fact into doubt doesnt go. Its not scientifically proven, but it IS fact****
I always start a new traxxx by a sample or a bassline. Often I listen music (Hip-Hop, Hardcore Punk, Reggae or everything other) and I hear a very exellent break, or riff, or scream and I stop winamp, put this song in Live, cut it, break it, put a amen break, some kick .... and after all that I think " Oh fuck another shity track" and shut down Live.
I listen music again and after 5 min I must start Live again for find something better in my track. 1 or 2 week after I have make a new song and start this process again !

I have several notebooks full of notes, scribbles, and ideas. I'll sit at the coffee shop or anywhere else and write down ideas . They could be song titles, album titles, effects chains, experimental drum arrangement algorithms or concepts to base an album or track on.
Often I start by gathering samples. This usually means making a bunch of sounds, beats, and getting experimental. I might record 20 minutes of noodling around on a synth and then go back and cut out little bits and chunks that I can loop.
After gathering samples I start arranging them in my software. Usually I'll use a small fraction of the sounds I gathered (by excluding ones that don't mesh well with what I've already written) and part way into the song I realize I need to make more samples.

I need to get back into doing that. I used to carry a moleskin book around with me to jot down stuff when I got great ideas.
