Postby JBL » Sat Apr 12, 2008 3:02 pm

I went to the Montreal Tenori-on Launch Event

It was quite interesting.

What do you think of the Tenori-on.. or do you have any questions?

There's been a test one in a shop near me for almost a year now but it's broken so I only got to look at it and pretend it was working. I really want one! Mainly because I love writing music but I'm too lazy to learn how to use any software, plus I love the live aspect. Saw UNKLE use one a few months ago and it was pretty impressive (the rest of the gig was shite though) but I've heard negative things about it from producers and it is currently far too expensive.

I've had my eye on the videos for it for a long time now and I find it fascinating. It is a bit too expensive for me. There is another midi device about like the tenori, but are in limited quanties and hand made with open source software. I forgot the name of it but daedalus uses on and he had a proto-type and helped test it out.

here's a video of him

There's the Lemur by JazzMutant which is suppose to be better because it's customisable and supports multi-touch but I don't think it's the one you're thinking of. I know the one you mean, I'll see if I can find it.

Yup thats it, daedalus has the one with the nice huge console and pretty wood grain exterior. That lil vst for it looks interesting.

It definitely looks like a really nice piece of kit and for someone who's quite practical, you can buy the electronics and keypad separately for a fraction of the price (around $200 as opposed to $800) and put it together themselves. Still, the thing that appealed to me about the Tenori-On was its "pick up and play" nature and the fact that it allowed anyone to create a whole live song on the fly, even if they have a limited musical knowledge. If I ever come into some money, I'm still very tempted to buy one.

Yeah I saw the monome a few months ago and I prefer its look.. but there are less buttons on it..

and, yeah the tenori-on is pretty effective since you just grab it and use it..

but I think it will mostly be used for the eye candy light it produce... makes live performance very interesting.

id get the monome easily before the tenori-on, which is cool kinda. I just don't like the sounds all that much.

It depends what you're into I suppose. I'm pretty keen on the whole minimal techno thing so it kinda has appeal that way. But I agree, if you are big on making music and you want to make something which isn't just repetitive bleeps, the monome is a better choice.

Well, it does have midi functionality, so sound possibilities are pretty much endless. It would be quite the interesting little controller.

The monome does look pretty badass though, esp for the price.

Here's yamaha's full page for it....

today, i just discovered the tenori-on on a online magazin (okok nothing new, i`m just out of information for a few month).
the price is a bit high (but ok its new, and we`ll see  ), but the concept is realy cool, a nice interface, especcially with the sampling opportunity (ok short sampling time, but you can do it) and the different modes are looking fine to me. (and you can run it with batteries)
something i dont like is the single midi in/out connector and the onboard sounds.
please yamaha: i wish a tenori-on ESX (like the korg device  ) with better midi implementation and sampling instead a sound generator (or a tenori-on based on FM synthesis  )...
