in some cases, I consider it anti-music.
doesnt mean I dont like it, just means I sometimes think it's anti-music.

I've always thought breakcore is the "dada movement" of music. But yeah, anti-music/-art covers it pretty well.
Just completely opposes all conventions of music and what people would consider "good". But that in itself is what art is all about anyway - breaking down the norm and recreating what we consider artistic. I mean, fifty years ago, this shit would have been absolutely intolerable. It's all about progression.

I used to dj dnb, a lot... it started off pretty mild, but over the years I found myself being more and more annoyed by my audiences, and totally bored with the music... so I started seeking out harder and more annoying dnb. it got to the point where I was really irritating my audiences, which made me laugh. eventually it led me to breakcore... and that my friend, pisses the dnb fans off... a lot.
I got black-listed from the local weekly here because the promoter said, "you can play, but take it easy on em.".. I deliberately played more breakcore influenced dnb type stuff... not breakcore mind you... and I cleared the club.
while this made me laugh... it pissed off the promoter and my audience to where there was basically noone left in the club, but maybe 4 other people that thought is was funny I cleared the club too.
hence why I call it anti-music
it's an aquired taste, and I like it

yeah travis, you got the point, i think its a "dada movement"!
maybe there's a connection with post-modern, chaos theory, or something else like that (yes there is!).
"BREAKING DOWN THE NORM"!!
eureka!
that's a good statement. In a modern life rubbish like this, the breakcore music maybe representated it all, the glitch, the noise, and the distortion of course, in real life, and also in music.
c'mon mate, let's discuss it together!

I think it sort of represents a paradigm shift in rave culture. Not unlike the 80's hair metal shift to 90's grunge.
Kids just get sick and tired of being deluded into false happiness and lash out.

I'm probably going to repeat what everybody has said in this topic, but never-mind.
As with all extreme music genres, thinking in particular of the evolution of thrash metal - death metal - grindcore, it's just a reaction to fans wanting harder stuff.
However I think breakcore is unique in that it pulls in, and as a producer, you can pull in influences from all other realms of music. It's also widely brought in stuff from other forms of electronic music, in that there's influence from ambient, happy hardcore, gabber, jungle etc.
So, breakcore as an entity is defined by it's influences. As a genre however, it's simply a way to herd all of these idiots with breaks and computers, loop machines etc into a single pen.

Your anecdote is very interesting but I don't understand how a bunch of people who like dnb would leave the place when they are breakcore.. I mean.. it's not like the show was supposed to be some relaxation landscape music... dnb and breakcore are kinda close if you look at it that way..
unless your breakcore was like.. harder and weirder than making orange things.. I really don't get it.. I would have been so happy to hear a dnb thing turning to breakcore! I understand that not everyone has my tastes.. but.. still.. I can't see how breakcore is hated by someone who likes dnb.. maybe they could prefer dnb over breakcore.. but.. well.. I gave up.
nice anecdote.

Most of my friends are into electronic music and the club scene - mainly dnb and breaks - but only a small portion of them are into breakcore. Out of those who dislike it, a large number of them will actively go out of their way to avoid it so I can easily see how hue-e experienced this. I've tried to get some of my friends into breakcore in the same way they've tried to get me into breaks. Yes, there are obvious similarities between dnb and breakcore but maybe it's that some people don't like the unpredictability of the latter, probably the same reason why others love it. You see the same within the breakcore scene itself - some dislike ragga jungle inspired breaks while others can't stand the more gabba orientated ones.
