akai mpc's

hi there.
i really suggest every gear lover wantin a tool to create and perform live without the use of a laptop check the mpc option.
no, i dont work for akai, is just that i love these machines and they really changed my workflow.
i used to own an mpc 2000xl and now switched to the flagship mpc4000.
concept is that u get one hell of a sequencer (the tightest possible) and one hell of a sampler (loop\drum sampler except for the 4000 that has a full fledged sampler within) together in a box with 16 drumpads to bang with yur head or dick or actually fingers.
these are all the models that have been created so far:
mpc 60 these two are the only done by roger linn ,12 bit sampling
mpc 60 mkII___________________________________________
mpc 3000--------->this is warm sounding as the 60 but with more features
mpc 2000 ---->this has a more crisp sound but tons new features
mpc 2000xl--->this is the 2000 improved with new stuff
mpc 4000------>the flagship, tons of ram, internal hd, 24 bit 96 khz sampling, 4 internal effects a graphical sequencer but very big and heavy
mpc 1000---->the first small one, not so many features as the 4k and shitty pads
mpc 2500--->improvement of the 1000, better pads new features
mpc 500-->the only portable, battery powered mpc. very small, small screen and only 12 pads but better built than the 1000's pads.

oooooooo yeah. Ive had my eye on an mpc for A REALLY long time.
Although ive been looking at the midi controller/software they make. seems a bit pricy, but looks like with the right set up you could do alot with it.

Gnaa, the MPC4000 is THE porn star for digital audio gear!
I WILL have her one day.
I also saw there's an analog filter extesion and an 8 analog outputs upgrade.
No more fuckin laptop and real hardware sound,but so damn expensive...
But i didnt realy get where are the real diferences with the last 2500,500,etc.Okay theyre more cheap,lighter...but also with less features?Does it worth it? Are there some time stretching features?

well,
1000/2500/500 has got both more and less features than the 4k.
look: the 4k is the only mpc with a real FULL sampler inside, and the only one capable to sample up to 24/96 (not that it is so much needed...)
plus has the largest amount of ram (512) and the tightest sequencer (960 ppq whereas the others got 96...ppq meaning Pulse Per Quarter = you can divide a quarter beat in 960 parts = with the quantize off, it will replay the stuff you recorded almost EXACTLY as you recorded it, for a techno head isnt important, but if you do jazz piano it makes the difference)
the 4k has 4 effects slots. a lot of cool visual sequencer features.
on the other hand , 1k, 1/2k and 2&1/2k are the only who support the Patched Phrase feature: sort of recycle stuff, where the phrase stretches in realtime as the tempo changes.
they have two effects PLUS one master effect (comp,eq)
they have also other cool features as direct recording but i dont know em very deep...check mpc forums and comparisons charts!

An MPC1000 or 2500 equipped with the unofficial JJ operating system is not to be fucked with.
The JJ OS adds a lot of features to the 1000 and makes it a much, much more capable machine. The pads aren't as good as the other MPC's though (I own one)
Even with the pad shortcomings, the JJ OS makes the 1000 a affordable and powerful MPC

It's made completely unofficially, separate from AKAI, by a Japanese programmer. There is a free version with less features and a $30 version with unlimited upgrades that has many more features than the free one and is updated with new versions very regularly.
Some of the new features are direct-record audio tracks, ring modulation, sample bit conversion (12, 8, 4, etc.), auto chromatic programs, grid edit, several MIDI improvements, etc.
That is just scratching the surface.
If any of you own an MPC1000 or MPC2500 then you really need to check out this OS. If you own a 1000 it will basically make the 1000 just as a capable as the 2500 (besides any hardware limitations)

I have one of the Mpc 1000's and have been wondering, will I be able to use it with ableton to trigger samples and shit? Or would it be better to use it on its own with other effects units?

I guess that if you got an MPC 1000 you wouldn't use Ableton anymore. Or if you want to use Ableton, you just look for a controler.
