i've used slayer but if i was going for that authentic guitar sound i sure as hell wouldnt. you can get some interesting feedbacks on it though, if you set up several instances and mix between them (don't resample, export them all to the same wav to maintain feedback environment)
although what works better for me is trying a variety of gen's through Amplitube, stringsynths are a good start. won't sound *more like a real guitar*, but WILL sound *less like a FAKE guitar*. may take awhile to find the best gen to put through it. also, envelopes.
currently, i much prefer this method to sampling actual guitars.

Nothing beats the real, but there are so many ways to sample or emulate, and that can lead to some interesting results too. There are a million amateur vids on youtube of guys playing their favorite Metallica/Pantera/Slayer riff on just a guitar, with no drums or band. Also a zillion vids of seasoned pros demoing the latest new distortion pedal or amp...you could record some of that, chop it up, compress & re-distort, speed it up, re-pitch it and so on. Mother Box provides...
