Meh, 2pac changed hip hop, for the worst imho. At one point it was the most powerul piece of social critique, it was the most influential outlet for the civil rights movement and it was hard to devise an argument against it unless you were a right-wing toss pot. From the 80s onwards the hip hop mainstream became dominated with gangster feuds and banal tripe which pretty much pissed on its reputation for good. It's one thing rapping about gangster shit, but when it's the only source of influence the music quickly becomes shallow and shit. Tupac contradicted himself on so many occassions, as did Dre ("I don't smoke weed, cus it gives a brother brain damage, and brain damage on the mic don't manage" > The Chronic), even KRS one went from being passionately anti-christian to recording a gospel record.
For this reason, I would honestly rather sit in my bedroom and listen to a load of experimental white boy backpacker shit like Soul, Company flow, Cannibal Ox and El-P than be subjected to yet another sexy r'n'b bum drubbing session.

tupac was the shit!
as for djtheblade's concerns, it is not unusual for people to contradict things they said years ago. people are not always the same people that they were on the last record, for instance, within a few years i have voiced the following opinions:
"bitches aint shit"
"bitches is pretty cool"

Yeah but unlike most people who listen to Gangster rap, I don't pretend to be a gangster or a "thug", I don't really relate to it because i'm not a thug or a jugglo or whatever ICP morons call themselves.
Public Enemy, there's a mainstream Hip Hop group that I can relate to (save for Griff's jew bashing).

In fact if I hear another 14 year old white girl playing changes on her mobile phone, i'm going to get a gun and reach a new high score. You'll see me on the news, I promise you that much.

Black Panthers and the Nation of Islam were/are terrible organisations. I think Chuck D later moved to distance himself from them, although for a long time Public Enemy were heavily involved in BP activism. I think most of the S1Ws and Public Enemy security were martial artists recruited from the Nation of Islam, which preaches a mixture of racism, pseudo-history and general bollocks. Chuck D is one of the few mainstream hip hop artists who still discusses racism, and I think he even denounced homophobia at one point, which is still taboo in Hip Hop, mainly because it's full of morons.

i'm sorry there but you just got a whole lot wrong there. way to go and make a load of assumptions about something you clearly know nothing about.
