True, it is unfair to exclude pop music here. For a start, there is a lot of good pop music out there and whether I like it or not isn't a good reason to call it uncreative - I'm sure most pop fans would be pretty unimpressed with the majority of what I listen to. There is a lot of bad pop music around as well though and that is what I have a problem with. It's not that there hasn't been huge amounts of work and creativity being put into making this stuff listenable - god knows how much they must have tried with Rhianna! But this topic is discussing the aim of producing music and this crappy pop stuff is unique in that the aim isn't creating something new but creating a product. Creativity and improvement seem to be sidelined.

but doesnt the product have to be new in order for it to have some sort of appeal? isnt the whole idea of capitalism fueled by the desire to have the latest and greatest product? hasnt art been defined by it's commissioners for thousands of years? i mean, i recognize that theres more bad pop than good pop, but theres way more shitty breakcore than good breakcore as well. im talking about what makes music good, and there is good, definitive music in every genre, from classical to breakcore to pop to country. im simply asking the question of pinpointing the qualities by which to judge our specific niche of music.
