listen how all the kick sounds have definition despite being totally distorted. in particular in the last section (4.09 onwards) where the kicks descend into almost pure noisy chaos. there is still a definite low end "boom". the part of the sound that feels like a punch in the face when its played on a proper big soundsystem in a club. this was not achieved simply by eqing, there is another (albeit not entirely clean in this case) sound sitting underneath it.

I have been experimenting with layering kicks together and such but I got some really "punchy" sounds from just EQ. It seems to me like layering will give you more control of the various aspects of the sound and layer things together gives you more freedom of choice in what to change like changing the intitial punch of the kick by putting a different punch on top.
