Free VST hosts for noobs & dummies - no tutorial needed

Postby Warpsmasher » Tue May 12, 2009 5:25 am

With this stuff, even people who know nothing about music software or virtual instruments will still be able to play with them. Behold!

Savihost is basically an exe wrapper for dll files...in other words, it turns VST instrument plugins (dll files) into standalone programs (exe files). Simply copy and paste the savihost.exe into the same folder as the .dll file of the VSTi you want to use, and rename it to the same name as the .dll file. For example, Cygnus is a VST synth that extracts to its own folder, where the Cygnus.dll file resides, so you paste a copy of savihost.exe into that same folder and rename it to Cygnus.exe. Now you have Cygnus as a program and not just a plug. It can be played with the mouse on the togglable virtual keyboard, or by midi input from an external keyboard, and even lets you record to wav while you play. Puts the entire world of free virtual instruments at anyone's fingetips. Couldn't be easier, and it's free, so there's no need to rely on anything that has to be bought, cracked or rapidshared. Sorted.

VSTHost is almost the same, but is more of a host program than an app-wrapper. Lets you chain multiple VSTs together (synth, effect 1, effect 2, etc etc) and record & save what you play, or what your sequencer plugin of choice plays. Easiest virtual instrument solution ever, so much more direct than Cakewalk or Cubase. See how each of the 3 little boxes on the top left here is a module representing a different VST. The controls on the modules are also super simple and self explanatory, just right-click around a bit and all will be revealed in plain english.
