Desktop vs Laptop.

Postby rtificial » Sat Jan 26, 2008 7:07 pm

I was wondering what everyones preference for music production is between a laptop or a desktop.

Also if you use a laptop setup, do you use a good pair of headphones? If so recommend some.

yea i use a laptop, turntable, mixer, and metronome, yes metronome, i found one that makes different sounds and goes up to 240 bpm, you can put quarter notes, eighths, sixteenths, and triplets, it's like 18 bucks, sickest thing ever!!

.

laptops are neat, but breakable and ppl like to steal them. desktops are now becoming less and less expensive, and when shit breaks, it costs a lot less to get new parts for a desktop.

I voted a mix, even though I do most everything on my desktop. I do also use a couple old hardware synths that are (barely) midi-capable.

I guess a desktop is a little less practical for a live setting but I voted a mix just because I do a lot of stuff on hardware.

Desktops are cheaper, id rather carry around a quad core desk and tower instead of a duo core laptop. Theyre both fragile anyway, besides that i like the x-fi soundblaster i have.

I seen some cool chip tune setups from the blip festival videos.

I'm thinking I'll be going the laptop route soon, since I don't wanna save up to buy a nice desk at the moment for a desktop. Plus I can bounce around and jump on wifi networks since I have no internet at the house.

1 Laptop : dell insp. 1520 core2duo 2 ghz laptop,2gb (slow)ram,shitty videocard,120gb hdd.
2 Desktops: Quad-core,4gig (fast) ram,1 Tb hdd's,8800gts nvidia graphic cards.Assembled by me.Stable 24/7 overclock from 2.4 to 3.6 ghz on air.
1 desktop cost is appx the same as the laptop.Compare the specs...
I don't (have to) do long (train) trips.
I love computer games and i do maps/3d props for HL2 and TF2.

So,desktops: music production,3d modeling,heavy duty 3d rendering-like,20 days non stop, some video production,heavy hi-res gaming.
Laptop:carry/discuss the results from the desktop to the clients.Rare gigs/jams with friends.

For the same amt. of money,i rate my desktop at least 3 times more powerful/ergonomic/reliable/useful than my laptop.

I voted all af the above.

Laptops are great for live performances.
Desktop ar great for studio or home abuse.
Hardware is great for both if you want to use hardware and I want someday.
Well thats how I see it.
