Is it ethical to record people's voices/activities to use in mash-up stuff without their consent? Does it matter if it's unrecognizable? I'm in New York, and I'm pretty sure that you can record people without their consent in this state, but I use a lot of candid vocal samples in my tracks and was wondering what the consensus was.

I don't believe there are any laws against recording people out in public. David Holmes did that in NYC by just walking the streets and recording random conversations with night people.

Now if you were doing something in the vein of Scanner who would burst into people cell phone conversations, radio air waves and whatever he could pick up live. You might run into some trouble. His lives shows were mostly him doing his material with live remixing and random bursting channels to add the conversations/sounds to his collage of sound.
