Sub bass

Postby DISEMBOWELLED » Sun Jun 17, 2007 3:41 pm

Could someone please explain to me how to build a synth that will produce some mad sub-bass sounds. I can't quite seem to get it...

cheers
Jag

edit: I'm using Reason 2.5 btw...

Try using a sin wave form, playing in octave 2. Overdrive it a bit, and put a bit of distortion on the mid range, this will keep the bass in tact, and add a bit of grime to it.
I don't need a fucking signature... WolfMerrik.com

if not a sinewave, try getting hold of an 808 bassdrum sample

hmm, I had some interesting results using a square wave and putting a couple of filters on it.
I'll be sure to try these 2 methods out as well..
are there any free VSTs knocking around that could do a good job of it? (dabbling in Ableton atm so the option of VSTs have become available to me hehe)

Using decent monitors can really be key, here, too.....
IDK what you're using but I've noticed that a lot of speakers designed for home stereo systems just kinda rumble whenever you have stuff below about 60hz and it's just impossible to tell what's going on down there. You mentioned you've just started out, so maybe a gear issue.

^ lol yeah, I am just using home stereo speakers haha. not much I can do about that at the minute, oh well.

and omg, 808 kick drum is like...instant sub bass, it makes me wonder how anyone could ever use it as an actual kick drum :S .

Try using a sine or a 808kick (the long one) or a gabber kick (low passed)

if you find your bass to be not deep enough.. just low pass it..

with the EQ and a low pass you can make almost everything sound as a big sub sound.

good luck.
