Venetian Snares - Pink & Green
Track Listing :
1. Pink + Green
2. Nutimik
3. Husikam Rave Dojo
4. Pink + Green VIP
5. Sporto Fucking Sellout Cocksuckerface
The NEW NEW NEWEST of the NEW Snares. This has been one of the most talked about, over-hyped-by-the-Internet albums in a very long time. Was it worth the wait?
This EP's title track sets the stage with lots of dnb stabs, heavy filtering and rather progressive drums. I must admit, the percussion on this EP is rather amazing, however I found a complete lack of melody and most of the synth work rather boring.
Next you have Nutimik and Husikam Rave Dojo. Nutimik really didn't stray from the formula the first track had set and seemed far too similar from the title track, however Husikam Rave Dojo kicks off with lots of great drum hits and loads of tight syncopation, In an almost (mock?)tribute to breakbeat happy hardcore. The synth work although classic sounding, is rather dull in this one as well.
By the time the EP had reached the Pink + Green VIP mix, the novelty of this being "The New Snares" starts to wear off. I really was hoping this album would be amazing, like one of those albums that you want so desperately to be good but just doesn't take the piss.
Until of course you get to the last track Sporto Fucking Sellout Cocksuckerface! This track is exactly what I was looking for - gabber kicks, tight drum fills, interesting synths and clever samples. This track takes me back to Winnipeg is a Frozen Shit Hole. Fast aggressive, and overall great.
In conclusion I found this EP to be rather tedious and dull. Although I can't say it wont ever grow on me. I've heard lots of comments said about Snares/This album, i.e. "If Snares didn't put it out, it would be crap". And yes, sometimes people do tend to be unfairly nice and generous with slack when it comes to artists like Snares, but I think in this instance it works the opposite - I found it easier to be unfairly critical on this album.
Artists like Venetian Snares set the direction of the breakcore scene... let's hope it doesn't follow Pink & Green.
